Ms. Mary Dougherty is a beloved part of the St. Francis School family, serving as the Food Service Director—or as she likes to say, “the school cook.” Every day, she prepares breakfast and lunch for the students and assists with special events. She also helps with playground duties and after-school care when needed.
Ms. Dougherty’s journey with St. Francis has truly come full circle. A former student herself, she was baptized, received her First Holy Communion, and was confirmed at St. Francis. When her sister shared a job posting for the school kitchen, Mary knew it was time to return to her roots. “Working at St. Francis is like coming home every day,” she shares.
Her favorite part of the job? The students. “These kids are awesome,” she says. “Our students make each day worthwhile. They have such great smiles and stories—it just puts a smile on my face!”
One memorable experience occurred when a student saw her outside school at a grocery store. Excited, he told his mom, “There’s my chef!” Moments like these warm her heart. She also describes getting goosebumps every time she hears the students sing “Make Jesus Famous,” a song she composed and graciously plays on the piano upon request.
Ms. Dougherty’s dedication goes beyond the kitchen, where she makes picnic lunch days extra special with her famous chocolate chip cookies (check out her recipe below!). She feels blessed to be part of the St. Francis community. “I truly believe that God put me here. This place is special. The students and staff have become like family to me.”
We are incredibly grateful to have Ms. Dougherty’s warmth, kindness, and culinary talents at St. Francis School! Thank you, Ms. Dougherty, for everything you do!
